Recollections: The Graceville I knew... and how we spent our free time

We seem to find plenty to do during our growing up days in Graceville. After school, it was a treat to go by the Service Drug Store or Cash Drug Store to meet up with your friends for a soda or milk shake.

Mr. Tom Crutchfield or Mr. Ashmore would be there at the Service Drug Store and Mr. Buck Barker or Mr. Mike Toole would be at the Cash Drug store to help with any drugs you might have prescriptions for. But the Soda fountains that were at each place was the main treat for the young people.

On the Weekends we had Bee’s Drive-in to circle or sit and visit other young people while having a soda or milk shake or maybe a hot dog or burger. That was if you had a car or was lucky to get the family car. Also, we had Jones Theater for movies, Saturday afternoons were always a time for the younger generations to spend there.

Summertime brought on another favorite pastime, swimming at the American Legion’s pool. I remember the water being very cold every time the pool was refilled. Of course, there were pretty girls sunning while teenage boys were trying to impress them by performing daring dives off the diving board at the deep end. Usually, the girls sunning was laying close to the Life Savers Sitting Stand. Younger children were learning to swim in the shallow end. There always seems to have been a pretty good crowd there.

Once in a while we got to travel up to Dothan for special outings such as roller skating at Baba-Lou Skating Rink or maybe the Martin Theater for a special movie such as “Gone With the Wind”. Thank you to all Graceville’s enterprising merchants and business people for the places that you helped provide for our days growing up.
