All across the nation citizens placed special glasses over their eyes and looked to the sky on Monday, April 8. A total solar eclipse occurred spanning from the northeastern portion of the United States to the Southern central portion of the country. The totality path began at the Mexican border in Las Quintas Fronteriza, Texas ending in Maine with the total phase lasting 4 minutes and 22 seconds.

While Graceville was not in the path of complete totality, citizens were able to enjoy the solar eclipse with 74.6% of the sub being obscured by the moon at its peak. Peak time was estimated between 1:57 and 1:59 PM. While local schools did not allow students outdoors due to the dangers to the eyes when looking directly in the sun, however many were able to watch it live in their classrooms. Other families opted to keep their children home or check them out to be able to view the eclipse outdoors.

The next total solar eclipse to get near the Graceville area is estimated to occur in approximately 21 years on August 12, 2045. This eclipse is expected to cross the United State from California to Florida with totality lasting just over six minutes. Making this even more special is that the Panama City area is expected to be in the path of totality.
