Former First Lady of Florida and Graceville native Margie Grace Mixson passed away on Wednesday, December 27. With deep roots in Graceville history and heritage, Mixson’s accomplishments will be remembered throughout the Graceville and Campbellton area.
A Graceville High School graduate and area native Margie Grace Mixson’s Grace family roots run deep in Graceville. Margie's great-grandfather Henry Bartlett Grace was one of the early settlers and founders of the town. Both of her parents were local educators and Margie graduated from Graceville High as Valedictorian before attending Florida State College For Women to become a teacher, and eventually became an Instructor at Chipola College.
She married local farmer, Wayne Mixson, who became an executive for Farm Bureau and was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. Her husband went on to serve from 1978-1986 as Lt. Governor with Governor Bob Graham. In 1986, Wayne Mixson became Florida's 39th Governor, finishing the last days of the Governor's term. This made Graceville's Margie Grace Mixson the "First Lady of Florida".
