
First Baptist Church Campbellton will be celebrating 200 years Sunday, March 16! The oldest active Baptist Church in the State of Florida, FBC Campbellton was officially established on March 12, 1825! The church holds a rich history in the community and will be celebrating its history and its future this Sunday.
According to church history, just over 200 years ago twenty citizens met in Campbellton and established First Baptist Church of Campbellton. A dive into the history of the church was written by Dr. Jerry Lee in 1990. That history includes the first service being held on March 13,1825. The church’s first pastor named as Reverend E.W. Callaway, its first clerk was Miller Brady, and its first Deacons were James Chason and Clark Jackson. The church went on its first mission on November 12, 1825 to Chattahoochee.
Known as “A Church with a warm spirit”, First Baptist Church Campbellton is known for its giving spirit, community love, and dedication to Christ and his word. Recognized as the oldest Baptist Church in the State of Florida, FBC Campbellton is historical in the state and Christian community. In the past 200 years, the church has been used for many things including being used as a school. According to various sources it was also a place where all could worship no matter race, class, or background. Charging its way through history, it is also noted as being the first church to have a Woman’s Missionary Society.
FBC Campbellton is currently pastored by Reverend Luther Pumphrey. In recent years the church has undergone several improvements including renovating the classroom area of the church building, adding handicapped restrooms, resurfacing the parking lot and updating the heating and cooling unit in the educational building.
Pastor Pumphrey wrote in a letter inviting all to the historical service, “All members and previous members as well as guests are especially invited to come and enjoy this day of celebration and praise to God for all He has done for and through our church in 200 years of service.” Member of FBC Campbellton have put together a wonderful service to honor their 200th Homecoming Sunday, March 16 with services beginning at 10:30 a.m. and followed by a covered-dish lunch. Dr. Jerry Windsor will be the guest speaker at the historical service. FBC Campbellton is located at 2405 Hwy 2 in Campbellton.
